This word was first born 800 years ago, drawn on from the scripture like those famous freaky paintings in Japan. In the Edo era (1700s), these artworks became a sex instruction manual and have now changed into pornography comics or anime.

The hentai we use is a short word for Hentai Seiyoku, which means pervert In Japanese. It can also be translated as "obscene."

So, it does not mean pornography… In Japan, writings that contain sexual content use the abbreviated H letter, pronounced Etchi (Ecchi), or use Ero and abbreviate Erotic. Both of these words refer to pornography.

But the word Hentai would more so mean unnatural sexual content, such as Female-Female (lesbian), Male-Male (gay), Human-Bestial, or just good old lewd content.

Hentai can be said to be born at the same time with Manga. Beginning in the year 700s - 1200s, it was called "Shunga", which actually translates to pornography in Japanese painting. This shunga was painted in the form of scrolls. Until the Edo period, wood molds were used to print images. Shunga painting changed to printmaking. At the same time, Shunga was banned by the shogun. Thus, they printed in small-medium sizes and had to hide them.

However, they were still used as a guide to teach sexual relations. In the 1920s, the word hentai was changed, and H / Ero was used to call pornography instead of Shunga. But it is still a taboo.

Until the end of World War 2, artists were free to draw as they wanted, resulting in a creative golden age. Whether it's a comic novel, or even what we call hentai, the strange likes of anime and manga are also coming to popularity.
